Surf Spots in Lombok

Discover Why Lombok Is a Surf Paradise

Lombok is the kind of surf destination that keeps things simple: warm water, consistent swell, and a mix of mellow bays and serious reef breaks. Based in Kuta Lombok, you can reach multiple quality waves in a short drive, which means you are never stuck with one option. Whether you are just learning, building confidence, or ready to push into more powerful surf, Lombok has a spot that fits.

Perfect for:

Beginners who want calmer takeoffs and friendly waves
Intermediate surfers working on timing, trimming, and turns
Confident surfers chasing faster walls and heavier reef breaks
Anyone who wants variety without spending hours on the road

Not for:

People who dislike warm tropical surf and strong sun
Surfers expecting empty lineups every day in peak season
Anyone not comfortable respecting local etiquette and safety rules

Best Surf Seasons in Lombok

Surf year-round in Kuta Lombok — just different coasts, different magic.

Lombok is one of the few surf destinations where there’s always a wave breaking somewhere. Instead of waiting for the “perfect season,” we follow conditions daily — tides, winds, and swell direction — to surf the right spot at the right time. That’s how surfing in Kuta Lombok stays consistent all year long.

Dry Season (April – October)

This is prime time on Lombok’s south and west-facing reefs. Expect clean swell lines, offshore winds, and playful to powerful waves.

Spots around Gerupuk, Tanjung Aan, and Ekas light up with long rides and reliable conditions. It’s busier than the wet season — but Lombok still feels relaxed compared to Bali.

Perfect for:
– Beginner to intermediate progression
– Longboard & shortboard sessions
– Clean morning and sunset surfs

Wet Season (November – March)

Often overlooked — and quietly amazing.
While many surfers leave, Lombok delivers glassy days, lighter crowds, and mellow conditions, especially around sheltered bays near Kuta Lombok. Short rain showers usually pass fast and often bring calmer winds.

Ideal for:
– Beginners learning comfortably
– Intermediate surfers refining technique
– Travelers who prefer uncrowded lineups
In Lombok, there’s no “bad” season — only different surf styles.

The Spots We Actually Surf in Lombok

Lombok has many breaks, but these are the spots that matter most when you are staying in Kuta Lombok. Each one offers something different, so we choose based on your level, the tide, and the conditions.

Mawi

Mawi is one of the more powerful and advanced waves near Kuta Lombok, known for stronger surf and more serious reef. This spot is best for confident surfers with good positioning, solid paddling strength, and experience in faster conditions. If you are not ready for it yet, we treat it as a future goal and build the skills step by step first.

Serangan

Serangan is a great alternative when you want a different type of setup, especially when conditions are not ideal at the usual south-coast spots. It can offer cleaner walls and a more structured lineup on the right day, making it a solid option for intermediates and advanced surfers who want variety and quality wave faces.

Ekas

Ekas is worth the drive when you want longer, more open rides and a full day surf mission. It is known for quality waves that can suit different levels depending on the break and conditions. We plan Ekas sessions for days when it is really firing, so the trip feels fully worth it and you get maximum time in good surf.

Tanjung Aan

Tanjung Aan is a great option when you want a more relaxed surf session close to Kuta Lombok. It is known for its scenic bay and approachable waves on the right conditions, making it a solid choice for beginners and improving surfers who want space to practice pop-ups, balance, and clean rides without too much pressure.

Gerupuk

Gerupuk is one of Lombok’s most popular surf areas because it offers multiple waves in one bay, which makes it perfect for progression. Depending on swell size and tide, there are options that suit beginners through to advanced surfers. It is also a reliable place for coaching sessions because we can select the best break for your current level on the day.

Are Guling

Are Guling is a scenic break with a fun, playful feel when conditions line up. It is often a good step-up spot for surfers who have the basics down and want longer rides to work on trimming, speed control, and turns. Timing and conditions matter here, so we plan this spot when it is best for your level and confidence.

Surf Etiquette in Lombok

Even in mellow tropical lineups, etiquette matters. Respect in the water keeps sessions safe and makes surfing more fun for everyone.

The non-negotiables:

No dropping in: One surfer per wave. If someone is already on the wave, it is theirs.
Respect locals: You are visiting, so read the lineup and give space.
Control your board: Do not ditch your board in the impact zone. Learn to manage wipeouts safely.

The Lombok-specific mindset:

A simple hello and friendly attitude goes a long way
Share waves, do not chase every single set wave
If you are unsure, ask your coach where to sit and when to go

Choosing the Right Surfboard for Lombok

Warm water and reef breaks mean you want a board that matches your ability and the wave type.

What we recommend:

Beginners: Soft-tops for safety, stability, and faster learning
Intermediate: Funboards around 7’0” to 8’0” for easier paddling and smoother progression
Advanced: Shortboards based on your preference and the conditions

The Lombok factor:

Reef breaks can damage boards, so use equipment you are comfortable with
Small improvements in volume can make a huge difference in wave count
One board rarely fits every spot, so we match gear to the session plan

Safety Tips: What Nobody Tells You

Lombok is beautiful, but reef and sun are real factors. A few smart habits keep you surfing more and worrying less.

Consider reef booties if you are surfing shallow reef
Clean any reef cut immediately to avoid infection
Plan sessions early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh midday sun
Stay hydrated, tropical heat adds up fast
Know your limits, especially at heavier waves like Mawi

Getting Around Lombok’s Surf Spots

From Kuta Lombok, most surf spots are reachable with a short drive. For day-to-day convenience and safety, transport matters.

Best ways to get around:

Surf transport with Nuna: We handle timing, logistics, and the best spot choice
Scooter rental: Flexible for short trips, best only if you are confident riding
Private driver: Great for group missions or longer trips like Ekas
Local ride options: Useful for quick town trips, less ideal with surfboards
